Baby Carrier – The importance of ergonomics from a chiropractic perspective

Baby wearing is an ancient practice that had almost disappeared in our western lifestyle, but that is back in force or a reason! There are several advantages, including helping baby adapt to his new extra-uterine life. But baby wearing is not just for newborns and can be practiced as long as mother and child wish, respecting the security and ergonomics of course!

Why respect ergonomics?

After birth, the newborn stays in a fetal position, bent limbs and rounded back. This position protects the baby’s spine and nervous system. The newborn does not have the muscle strength to support his spine and joints. During its first year of life, baby experiences the fastest rate of growth and development in his life. This is why it is important to respect the proper positioning of the spine, which protects the nervous system, and its limbs, especially his hips.

Must be respected at all time

  • The baby’s airway must be cleared
  • Face uncovered
  • Supported by the buttocks up to the knees
  • Must not be supported by the fork or genitalia
  • The legs should not be hanged loose
  • No point of contact for the feet
  • The head and spine should not be extended or arched backward
  • Never sleep while baby wearing
  • Check the condition, solidity and instructions of the carrier

Baby ergonomics before 4 months

  • Spine rounded from buttocks to neck, without twisting or lateral bending
  • Head supported at kissing reach
  • Can put his hand to his mouth
  • Knees are at the height of his pelvis or above
  • Posture of a frog

Ergonomics baby after 4 months

  • Slightly rounded spine, head supported at kissing reach, hands to his mouth, knees up to his pelvis or above
  • Legs apart on each side of the holder, position that the baby can take naturally, never force the leg abduction
  • When baby is able to pass from the lying to sitting by himself, back carry is possible

Holder’s ergonomics

  • Symmetry must be respected as much as possible, on stomach or back
  • For asymmetric carry alternate sides and limit length of time
  • Make sure the weight is evenly distributed
  • No pain or pressure point
  • Have a good abdominal and pelvic support

Forward facing

  • Hard to respect hips and spine ergonomics
  • Usually not comfortable for the parent
  • Do not let baby sleep in this position, the head is not supported properly
  • Try to avoid or short period of time only

Consult your chiropractor or other a healthcare professional for the following reasons: premature baby, congenital torticollis, a flat head or a congenital hip dysplasia, mother with back, spinal or shoulder problems, pregnant woman or any other health concerns.
