Breastfeeding

The breastfeeding period typically extends from birth to 6 months. During this time, adequate nutrition is crucial for the health and growth of your baby. The diet of a new mother is also expected to change after childbirth. Whether it’s for mom or baby, a registered dietitian from ABC Health Clinic is here to help!

Baby

Breastfeeding is the preferred feeding method for infants aged 0 to 6 months. However, whether you are a first-time mom or have had multiple children, difficulties related to breastfeeding can affect anyone. Your registered dietitian is there to help you overcome any challenges. If you are uncertain about the most suitable feeding method for your baby, your registered dietitian can also discuss alternatives and assist you in selecting the one that best suits both you and your baby. For example, if your child appears to be intolerant to breast milk or shows symptoms of allergy to the current formula, your registered dietitian can suggest a more suitable formula. Regardless of the chosen feeding method, you and your registered dietitian will develop a solid feeding plan. Your child’s growth will also be monitored to ensure the suitability of the plan.

Mom

After childbirth, a mother’s nutritional needs are expected to change. Even though your nutritional needs are not as elevated as during pregnancy, you still have specific dietary requirements to maintain adequate milk production. Also, certain foods that you had to avoid are now allowed, while others should still be avoided. Meeting with a registered dietitian will allow you to assess your diet. Together, you will determine how your diet needs to be modified to support your milk production. You can also work on achieving other goals you may have, such as returning to your pre-pregnancy weight. However, nutrition is more than just knowing what to eat! Your registered dietitian will adapt these recommendations to your busy daily life, providing you with several strategies that will help you eat well, even when the nights are short!
